Oh boy, looks like the battle is on! Both devices look similar but run completely different platforms. However, since the HP Slate device runs a full-fledged OS (Windows 7), the ability to run Adobe Flash/Air might also be a major deciding factor over which device will gain more popularity among future customers.
Watch for yourselves.

Performance wise iPad wins by far.
Adobe Air 2 supports multitouch and gestures, can run on PCs and Macs, however it’s still in beta and is slow and not as responsive as the iPad.

We’ll have to see which device tops the other once they’re officially out in the market and in the hands of consumers and techies alike.
However, when it comes to the whole Adobe and App market, here’s my two cents:
My ideal Apple tablet would have been one that runs the desktop version of OS X, thus allowing you to run any app you can run on your Mac (including Adobe Flash and Air). In terms of design, Apple could have reused elements from the MacBook Air to fit actual computer parts in a small package to create an amazing looking tablet. As for the OS, it already includes support for multitouch control. The idea of an Apple tablet has long been provided by 3rd parties using a MacBook base (look up Modbook by Axiotron).
The stripped down OS (AKA iPhone/iPad OS), while it makes sense for the iPhone as the only and primary OS, only seems convenient on a tablet for a quick boot to access basic info (think something like Windows Sideshow but with an Apple flavor).
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting down the iPad. I’m simply describing my dream tablet. And ultimately, as much as I want the iPad when it comes out, I’m weighing all my options and rethinking the iPad. As a matter of fact, after exchanging comments with Moemen in a different post, I might hold out on the first generation. My hackintoshed NetBook might just be the perfect “middle” product between my Mac Mini, iMac, MacBook trio and my iPhone.
