I never thought my Facebook status could attract such controversy and interest. But was I ever wrong! I wrote this article after the hilarious argument I engaged in when I changed my status to “… is pissed at the world 4 making Mac products everywhere! No longer for the elite :( And since when did everyone develop such an interest in it?

After marketing iPods the way it has, Apple became the leading in the world of media. Along with its new line of Macbook laptops, first released in 2006, and showing the slickest designs and the most efficient specifications in the world of computers, there was no stopping Apple and expectations became gigantic!

The Mystifying iPhone!

It was not long ago that the iPhone phenomenon hit the world. A mysterious gadget with lots of censorships and rules, only available for limited audience and out of reach by the rest of the world desperately waiting to get hold of this amazing looking and promising phone that encapsulates the world. Not surprisingly all the mystery attracted hackers and it didn’t take long before everyone with a sense of coding was involved.

People around the world went crazy buying iPhones for any price and going as far as black markets to get one. But now, the mystery is unleashed! 3G versions of iPhones are everywhere, and easily accessible by anyone for reasonable prices. However, the propaganda already did the “damage” and everyone’s still rushing to own one.

The Macbook Tsunami!

Now Apple released its new Macbooks and Macbook Pros with amazing features and looks as usual. But this time they don’t go unnoticed! The traffic on iPhones came in handy to Apple, because people are now exposed to this new world, once available only to the “crème of society”. Everyone who lays eyes on the new Macbooks fall in love and it’s becoming addictive. The Macbook tsunami is hitting Egypt like crazy. The price is not as extravagant as Macbook Pros, and the difference is not ample if compared to highline laptops such as Sony Vaios, so it just makes sense to start having this gorgeous gadget and everyone’s going Mac!

The Endless Debate: Apple, Microsoft and Linux

Microsoft (MS) and Apple in specific have been competitors since forever. On the one side, I believe it is unfair to compare any open source operating system to Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X, because as one of my friends once put it in one of our debates: “You can’t compare apples to oranges.” So personally, I don’t include Linux in my comparison. I also believe that the real question is about hardware and where you want to place your money.

It is without question that when it comes to marketing, Microsoft beats them all. That is, we all grew up using MS products up till the very day. We get the dreadful blue screen that interrupts our crucial work or a virus that shatters our long hours of sleepless research, yet we still buy and use MS in our day-to-day lives and will probably prevail to do so forever. However, this doesn’t mean that MS products are any better than Mac, it just means that the business minds behind it didn’t graduate from Harvard for nothing.

On the other hand when it comes to development, Linux is an open source community providing for autonomy irresistible to anyone with coding passions, and with distributions such as Ubuntu that built an interface very close to that of Apple, Linux sure wins for this audience. But as I said, we don’t have Linux if we don’t have a machine to install it on, so unless they have their “Lino” machine anytime soon, I don’t plan to argue for or against it. Just run it on a Mac and on a PC and set the verdict for yourself.

However, back to the main argument, when it comes to innovation Apple slays them all because it’s always the leader on setting the ground rules. It’s got the most powerful, yet gorgeous-looking hardware, the user-friendliest interface ever, the newest ideas made to customize the system to one’s preferences, the best programs and their most efficient versions, and a connectivity like no other when it comes to media and networking. Furthermore, there are no compatibility issues remaining anymore since the Intel-based lines and Universal software came to life. No matter what features I state I’d do Macs no justice, so lets just put it that way: “My Mac is my life, and my life is ME, so my Mac is ME.” Then again if you still want to run Windows or Linux, you can always run them on a Mac and get the best performance out of them that you can.

So that was only my opinion… And you’ll get a glimpse of what other people think about all this.. But what do you guys say in the matter? Before hearing from you, I’m sure u’ll enjoy this as much as i have even if you have different opinions :)

I rest my case…

humm, well, i can’t speak for the regular consumer, or even the nerdy geeks, but as a designer living in Egypt, more than 8 years in my field, I’ve gone from regular cheap PC builds to a top of the shelf Alienware PC(current).
I’ve never laid a hand on a Mac pro, but as far as any other laptop i tried, Dell/HP/SONY, they all really suck, so I’m ready for a serious change, NOT because there is any competition for creatives like myself, by far apple products has earned it’s good reputation.
I’m getting all good signals about good experience from my co workers/clients, and almost anyone i know who uses Mac-mostly contacts from USA/EUROPE, so i don’t have much of a choice, it’s a done deal for me, I’m hooked, it’s just a matter of saving a HUGE amount of money for a 17″ Macbook pro, and an iPhone, and don’t get me wrong it’s still an investment for me.

as for the iPhone, i’ve tried it when it first came out, had it with me for a week, and since then, i was in love, so until Google comes out with-inevitable- something better than the G1, I’m falling for another iPhone.

with all that said, i wouldn’t understand , why would a regular user, a non professional regular user, with only internet browsing and office needs would fall for anything other than a regular- notice the use of word regular- laptop :P , unless like most Egyptian think of gadgets as something that will put you among the L33T.
So, the true debate is, do you need a mac/iphone, or not? it’s not the matter of having the right finance/money.
