So far the only available method to unlock your 3G iphone (If restricted to a certain carrier- you are locked) was by using the SIM proxy…which is a small SIM shaped circuit that you place just over your SIM card , that tricks the Iphone into believing you are running the authorized SIM, I am using this method to trick my AT&T locked iphone 3G and its working great,,but it has a downside and that I cant upgrade my Baseband firmware (The firmware responsible for the 3G/2G signaling) later than the 2.11.07, If i upgraded to the FULL 2.2 ( baseband 2.48 something) I would have disabled my Proxy SIM and ended up with a very expensive ipod 
But the trusty people of DEV-TEAM the guys who wrote the famous Pwnage tool ( allowing you to customize the firmware and jailbreaking your phone to install customized apps) recently announced that they will release the much awaited soft-unlock method so you can disable the carrier lock and be free like a bird to use the carrier of your choice,,and by doing so ( re-installing the firmware ) you can re-enable the GPS as an added bonus.
I used the previous tool (Pwnage) to upgrade my phone to 2.2 while retaining my current baseband and it worked like a charm…cant wait till they release the soft unlock tool so i can drop my Proxy turbo sim chip.
for you guys on etisalat ,,the wait is nearly over.

If you mean unlock the carrier restriction on using other SIM, then you first need to decide if you want to use software unlock in which case you MUST have a baseband that IS or below 2.11.07 (settings>general>about>modem firmaware) and you will have to wait till the dev-team release it this new year’s eve. and you will be using the pwnage tool ( very very easy and straight forward if you have a mac) the windows version is a bit less reliable.
or else if you dont have any technical knowledge you can use the Proxy turbo SIM ( the best is GEVEY-3G and i described how they work in the main post) and you can get it from ebay for 7 $ , BUT take care they only work if your modem baseband IS (2.11.07) or lower, they are working on developing a new SIM proxy for the baseband included in the 2.2 firmware ( higher than 2.11.07) it should be around within few weeks.
if your iphone already has the 2.2 with the latest baseband then you are pretty stuck with your carrier till the new year ( SW unlock) or they develop the Turbo SIM that works with this update. so far none.

Actually u can use the Pwnage tool to unlock firmwares 2.x up to 2.1 anyway..
It does the 3 things u need: Activate, Unlock, and Jailbreak
However, the awaited thing is to Unlock 2.2 which means u can still use pwnage to Activate and Jailbreak, yet without having it work with any Sim other than your own..
