***** Update: You can upgrade iPhones or 1st Generation iPod Touches (No support for newer versions yet), Pwnage 2.2.1 is Out! *****
For the first time since the first iPhone was out, an Unlock was available pre-Jailbreak release! Dev-Team’s YellowSn0w unlock still works with the new firmware, yet Pwnage tools to jailbreak the iPhone or iPod Touch were scarce (Read the earlier feed about that, and what features are added by the upgrade in general, here) until moments ago… So before the release of a jailbreaking tool, you could have upgraded to have a phone working but without all the goodies that come along with jailbreaking, so it was advised to wait until the release of a Pwnage update before doing so. But now the wait is over!
Dev-Team has done it once more and in less than 48 hours fixed this issue where we can once more do it all! The guide is here:
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/61060174/the-man-from-delmonte-he-say-yes
However, read the instructions well because they are advising to use Pwnage Tool (Only available on Macs) and not QuickPwn, because the manual settings in it prevent the possible ruining of issues related to future updates…
If you want to understand the difference between Activation, Jailbreaking and Unlocking, refer to our guide about that here.
Trivia:
Many rumors have it that a nano version is about to come to life… However, there was an official denial of such gossip, yet with the release of this firmware update, meta data found on the system files suggest that even though a nano version is unlikely, a new iPhone model may very well be on its way. How do they know? Well history repeats itself and before the 3G version was released similar meta data was found to hint the possibility of a new iPhone model….
For more information check out modmyi’s update on the issue.

I saw this update 2 days ago when it came out… I’m an Apple fan, but I’d wish they listen to users and give them REAL updates instead of fixes that nobody even noted they existed, just to put users in they “Upgrade or Don’t Upgrade?” zone because they want to fight the jailbreaking business. I don’t know about you, but I’ll wait for 2.3
What I’d like to see in the next upgrade is:
1- A2DP support. For those of you who don’t know what that is, try listening to your music through your bluetooth headphone… can’t, right? any phone starting from 200 EGP can do that, but the wonder phone of the 21st century which costs around 4000 EGP can’t. Ridiculous, Isn’t it?
2- Copy and Paste.. Almost every Nokia handset has it, starting from the first one I got (6110, anyone?). Back then, no one had Accelerometers, Multi-Touch functionality, not even color screens.. but we still got it.
3- Business Cards: How many time someone tried to send you one, and it showed that it’s delivered on their phone but your Iphone didn’t feel the love? Sure you have programs like Handshake to send them, but both iphones should BUY the software and be on THE SAME wifi network to be able to exchange numbers. Problem is; Nokia almost exclusively has this feature, and since they own more than 60% of global market, why can’t Apple integrated such a VERY COMMON function? … I wonder
4- Arabic Keyboard: I would like to thank the guys at iArabizer, but this actually IS Apple’s job, not theirs. And for those of you who spent a hefty $30 to Iphone Islam for arabic suuport.. Bad luck.
5- Send Files: Again, ALL decent phones, PDAs and Smartphones, can send files via infra-red and bluetooth since ages. I shouldn’t buy a software to do so.
Soon, May be 2011, I believe that Apple will release a new Iphone which supports a Memory Card, with a better camera and may be a front camera for video calls as well, and officially unlocked for everyone..These are the logical steps forward. But until then.. Apple; would you please listen to your users?
Funny to say that these requests are dated back to the 2G version of Iphone.. Will we see these features in the near future?

Grr.. How do I edit my Grammar mistakes after posting ?
January 30th, 2009 at 12:35 am
lol good point, guess ur stuck with those or u’ll need to bribe the admin to edit it for u
Well i’m with u that its frustrating that apple doesn’t release official apps or functions like those really basic ones…
but then again when u think of ur iphone as a gadget where u can innovate and do stuff urself u actually feel more pride using it…
Look i WONT defend apple but i hand it to them to give us the phone that can never become boring because with each update, they allow more control over the hardware which is very powerful and will do wonders eventually… Apple gave us a very powerful tool but they are unravelling its secrets a bit too slow..
ya3ny check out the gaming wonders now available… and there are programs to do almost everything, so well as frustrating as it is that u have to rely on 3rd party apps to do very trivial functions, its also sort of the essence of iphones… it will never get boring because everyday sth new is out, later having more competition, etc…

well guys , according to MacRumors , apple is already working on a new model , . the latest update 2.2.1 has an iPhone product model 2,1 hidden deep inside the metadata. Apple uses these numbers to differentiate different hardware versions. So, this hints at a new version of the iPhone as the model of current 3G version is just 1,2.
so let’s just wish they fix the camera issues , front camera and any hardware related issues in this one

QuickPWN just released the Jailbreak for 2.2.1 – I’ve successfully installed it and freed my iPhone.
I’ve also copied the GPS file (locationd) – the same previously used and yes, GPS is back rocking, banging and bliping again baby ; )
Go ahead guys; it’s safe!

Guys , PwnageTool 2.2.5 is officially out by the DEV-TEAM , it’s recommended to use only the PwnageTool 2.2.5 if u r on 3G and want a future unlock , cause PwnageTool 2.2.5 reserves the baseband , quickpwn won’t do the trick

@Ghalia
what are third party applications? i use Jaadu VNC to remotely open my computer and control it from my iphone so i think its pretty awesome.
@Rami
what do u mean so i shouldn’t update and then jailbreak with quickpwn? try to talk simpler so 15 year olds could understand plz.

@ b@r@k@t
It’s simple :d , don’t update then jailbreak by quickpwn if u want yellowsn0w to work , cause updating with the original firmware will update the baseband which breaks the unlock .
if u want the new firmware 2.2.1 , then , download the latest Pwnage tool 2.2.5 and make a custom restore image , so u can avoid upgrading the baseband . then restore from it in itunes
